Perseverance Rover’s Descent and Touchdown on Mars (Official NASA Video)

  • Visualizações 13,821,526
NASANASA
  • 136 190 2 025

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance mission captured thrilling footage of its rover landing in Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The real footage in this video was captured by several cameras that are part of the rover's entry, descent, and landing suite. The views include a camera looking down from the spacecraft's descent stage (a kind of rocket-powered jet pack that helps fly the rover to its landing site), a camera on the rover looking up at the descent stage, a camera on the top of the aeroshell (a capsule protecting the rover) looking up at that parachute, and a camera on the bottom of the rover looking down at the Martian surface.

The audio embedded in the video comes from the mission control call-outs during entry, descent, and landing.

my guess is that the sky crane passes the video to the rover by cable. Once you cut the cable, you cut the video feed. That's my guess tho, could be something else entirely

Good question. Mars has an atmosphere but it is less than 1% of Earth's. The parachute alone couldn't slow down the Mars Exploration Rover enough to ensure a safe low landing speed so retro-rockets also had to be used. However ... my question is ... Why is the sky blue? There's no water to reflect in order to make the sky appear blue!

Pioneer 10 & 11, Voyager 1 & 2, Viking 1 & 2, Spirit & Opportunity (MER) were all launched as “twins”. So, sometimes we do launch multiple spacecraft. Despite what you think, money is a large reason for launching single spacecraft.

@Built like Bluechip Exactly, if nasa didn’t have a budget just 0.5% of the national one then yes, it WOULD be viable, because it would he affordable to nasa, it’s just the us government is too busy doing military stuff
  • Built like Bluechip
    Built like Bluechip

@Lovro Rukljic they have the money to send ridiculous amounts of tech into space at once. Do you realise how much is actually spent on defence and the us army? The figure is just silly. But i cave. It’s money. Not economically viable. Cos we need to fund wars all over the world with that money. All good it was just a thought anyway. Forget you read it ✌️
  • Lovro Rukljic
    Lovro Rukljic

But, the response IS money, launches and technology are very expensive, so multiple missions don’t make sense economically

@Rui Menor - The sky crane had a single job. To safely place Perseverance on the surface of Mars. It had no capability to land or be used for some other purpose. They wanted it far from the rover when it crashed to prevent any contamination from the remaining hydrazine fuel and, of course, to make sure no debris came close to the rover. I’m not sure of the exact criteria for how far it flew, but it was programmed to do just that.

@Rui Menor the amount of fuel necessary would be doubled, and they can't simply transport petrol to it

@Steve Adams but why crash and so far away? Could it just land nearby? Could be useful some day no?

The sky crane flew itself about 700 meters from the rover and crashed. It did exactly what it was supposed to do.

So pictures are not enough? Some people say video is not enough. What would be enough? A tactile touchy feely experience?
